V-Studio 700 - What Software/Updates do I need to install?
Last updated on 3/24/2016Depending on which version of SONAR and what V-Studio hardware you own, your installation procedure will be unique. Below are instructions for installing the drivers, the software included with the VS-700 and for configuring the hardware and software for use with one another.
Driver & Firmware Installation Instructions:
There are two versions of drivers for the VS-700:
- Version 1.0 Drivers
	
- Recommended for initial setup - minimal installation steps required
 - NO Firmware updates required - compatible with all VS-700s out of the box
 - Release drivers
 
 - Version 2.0 Drivers
	
- Not recommended for initial setup - advanced installation steps
 - Firmware updates ARE required - Must install the following firmware... VS700C CONSOLE: v1.31, VS700R CPU/DSP: v1.30, Fantom VS: v1.30
 - Required if you are planning to use a VS-700 and a Roland OCTA-CAPTURE simultaneously with ASIO drivers
 - Latest drivers - lower latency available, compatibly with Roland OCTA-CAPTURE, compatibility update for ARX Expansion series
 
 
To install the version 1.0 drivers:
- VS-700 version 1.0 drivers can be downloaded from our website here.
 - For the VS-700 SET, download the folder titled "VS700 SET Windows Drivers v1.0" to your desktop.
 - Right-click on your downloaded folder and select "Extract..."
 - In the extracted folder, locate the driver for the version of Windows you have installed. This download includes drivers for Windows XP (32-bit), Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
 - Launch Setup.exe to begin the installation process
 - More detailed instructions on the installation process can be found on page 8 of the VS-700 Getting Started Guide .
 
To install the version 2.0 drivers:
- Update your VS-700 firmware to the latest firmware. Official instructions on how this process is done can be found here .
 - VS-700 version 2.0 drivers can be downloaded from our website here.
 - For the VS-700 SET, download the folder titled "VS700 SET Windows Drivers v2.0" to your desktop.
 - Right-click on your downloaded folder and select "Extract..."
 - In the extracted folder, locate the driver for the version of Windows you have installed. This download includes drivers for Windows XP (32-bit), Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
 - Launch Setup.exe to begin the installation process

SONAR 8.0 Producer and VS-700 SET
Required Installation Steps:
- Install the VS-700 software from the SONAR V-Studio 700 installation disc. Instructions on doing so can be found on page 18 of the VS-700 Getting Started Guide.
 - Install SONAR 8.0 Producer, Dimension Pro, Beatscape and the Additional Content from the 4 installation discs.
 - Download and install the SONAR 8.3.1 update available here.
 - Download and install the Beatscape 1.0.2 update available here.
 - Download and install the Dimension Pro 1.5 update available here.
 - Download and install the Rapture 1.2.2 update available here.
 - Download and install the V-Studio 700 Control Surface Plug-in version 1.2 update available here.

Configuring SONAR 8.0 Producer for use with the VS-700 SET
- Power on both the VS-700R and VS-700C and then open SONAR
 - In SONAR go to Options | Audio
 - Under Advanced, set your Driver Mode to "ASIO". Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under Drivers, make sure all of your VS-700 audio drivers are enabled under Input Drivers and Output Drivers. Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under General, make sure your Playback Timing Master and your Record Timing Master are both set to the VS-700. Typically you will set the Playback Timing Master to the outputs your speakers are plugged in to on the VS-700R. In other words, if you are using the XLR outputs in the Monitor section, you will want to choose "MAIN (VS-700)" versus if you are using the 1/4" outputs where you would want to choose "SUB (VS-700)". Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Click [OK] to close the Audio Options menu
 - In SONAR go to Options | MIDI Devices
 - Select the following MIDI ports under both Inputs and Outputs: CONSOLE (VS-700), FANTOM VS (VS-700), and IO MIDI (VS-700). You do not need to enable ARX (VS-700), V-LINK (VS-700) or DV-7 (VS-700) unless you have the compatible hardware connected. NOTE: Do NOT select "IO (VS-700)". The "IO (VS-700)" MIDI port is used for firmware updates to the VS-700R and should not be enabled in SONAR. If it is enabled it will not harm your unit, however your pre-amps will not work properly unless you disable it and re-launch the application. Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Click [OK] to close the MIDI Devices menu
 - In SONAR go to Options | Controllers/Surfaces
 - Click on the "Add New Controller/Surface" button on the top right. For Controller/Surface select "VS-700" and for the Input Port and Output Port select "CONSOLE (VS-700)". Click [OK].
 - Finally click [Close] on the Controllers/Surfaces menu
 
SONAR 8.0 Producer and VS-700C Only
Required Installation Steps:
- Install the VS-700 software from the SONAR V-Studio 700 installation disc. Instructions on doing so can be found on page 18 of the VS-700 Getting Started Guide.
 - Install SONAR 8.0 Producer, Dimension Pro, Beatscape and the Additional Content from the 4 installation discs
 - Download and install the SONAR 8.3.1 update available here.

Configuring SONAR 8.0 Producer for use with the VS-700C
- Make sure the VS-700C is configured for Stand-Alone mode (DIP switch 1 on the back of the unit is set to "On")
 - Power on the VS-700C and then open SONAR
 - In SONAR go to Options | MIDI Devices
 - Select "CONSOLE (VS-700C)" under both Inputs and Outputs. You do not need to enable "V-LINK (VS-700C)" unless you have the compatible hardware connected.
 - Click [Apply] and then [OK]
 - In SONAR go to Options | Controllers/Surfaces
 - Click on the "Add New Controller/Surface" button on the top right. For Controller/Surface select "VS-700" and for the Input Port and Output Port select "CONSOLE (VS-700C)". Click [OK].
 - Finally click [Close] on the Controllers/Surfaces menu
 
SONAR 8.0 Producer and VS-700R Only
Required Installation Steps:

Configuring SONAR 8.0 Producer for use with the VS-700R
- Power on the VS-700R and then open SONAR
 - In SONAR go to Options | Audio
 - Under Advanced, set your Driver Mode to "ASIO". Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under Drivers, make sure your VS-700 audio drivers are enabled under Input Drivers and Output Drivers. NOTE: when the VS-700R is used in stand-alone mode, the Monitor (VS-700 MAIN & VS-700 SUB) outputs are not available so they should not be selected in this menu.
 - Click [Apply] if any changes were made.

Configuring SONAR 8.5 Producer for use with the VS-700 SET
- Power on both the VS-700R and VS-700C and then open SONAR
 - In SONAR go to Options | Audio

 - Under Drivers, make sure all of your VS-700 audio drivers are enabled under Input Drivers and Output Drivers. Click [Apply] if any changes were made.

Configuring SONAR X1 Producer for use with the VS-700 SET
- Power on both the VS-700R and VS-700C and then open SONAR
 - In SONAR go to Edit | Preferences
 - Under Audio > Playback and Recording, set your Driver Mode to "ASIO". Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under Audio > Devices, make sure all of your VS-700 audio drivers are enabled under Input Drivers and Output Drivers. Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under Audio > Driver Settings, make sure your Playback Timing Master and your Record Timing Master are both set to the VS-700. Typically you will set the Playback Timing Master to the outputs your speakers are plugged in to on the VS-700R. In other words, if you are using the XLR outputs in the Monitor section, you will want to choose "MAIN (VS-700)" versus if you are using the 1/4" outputs where you would want to choose "SUB (VS-700)". Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under MIDI > Devices select the following MIDI ports under both Inputs and Outputs: CONSOLE (VS-700), FANTOM VS (VS-700), and IO MIDI (VS-700). You do not need to enable ARX (VS-700), V-LINK (VS-700) or DV-7 (VS-700) unless you have the compatible hardware connected. NOTE: Do NOT select "IO (VS-700)". The "IO (VS-700)" MIDI port is used for firmware updates to the VS-700R and should not be enabled in SONAR. If it is enabled it will not harm your unit, however your pre-amps will not work properly unless you disable it and re-launch the application. Click [Apply] if any changes were made.
 - Under MIDI > Control Surfaces click on the "Add New Controller/Surface" button on the top right. For Controller/Surface select "VS-700" and for the Input Port and Output Port select "CONSOLE (VS-700)". Click [OK].
 - Finally in Edit | Preferences click [Apply] and then [Close]
 
SONAR X1 Producer and VS-700C Only
Required Installation Steps:
- Install SONAR X1 Producer, Dimension Pro, Beatscape and the Additional Content from the 4 installation discs or downloads included in your Cakewalk account. You can access your account here. If you do not have access to your download, please contact Customer Service.
 - Download and install the SONAR X1c update for SONAR X1 Producer available here.
 - Download and install the SONAR X1d update for SONAR X1 Producer available here.
 - Download and install the Rapture 1.2 and then Rapture 1.2.2 updates available here. Note: You will need to have Rapture registered to be able to access this update. If you have not already registered Rapture, please register here .

- Make sure the VS-700C is configured for Stand-Alone mode (DIP switch 1 on the back of the unit is set to "On")
 - Power on the VS-700C and then open SONAR
 - In SONAR go to Edit | Preferences
 - Under MIDI > Devices select "CONSOLE (VS-700C) under both Inputs and Outputs. You do not need to enable "V-LINK (VS-700C)" unless you have the compatible hardware connected.
 - Under MIDI > Control Surfaces click on the "Add New Controller/Surface" button on the top right. For Controller/Surface select "VS-700" and for the Input Port and Output Port select "CONSOLE (VS-700C)". Click [OK].
 - Finally in Edit | Preferences click [Apply] and then [Close]
